Mondsee (Moon Lake) is one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut. Since Roman times, this crescent-shape lake has been named for the celestial body it resembles. The Salzburg-Vienna Autobahn runs along the south shores of this, the third-largest lake in the Salzkammergut district. In the background you can see the Drachenwand and the Schafberg mountains.

The lake is sparsely settled, so if you want to find accommodations, you should head to the northwest corner for the village of Mondsee. A popular summer resort, with sailing schools and beaches, Mondsee is 270km (168 miles) southwest of Vienna, 27km (17 miles) east of Salzburg, and 100km (62 miles) southwest of Linz.
