The Riu opened this stylish brand-new, adults-only resort (over 18 only) in the winter of 2013/14 on the beach at Mahoe Bay, just across a footbridge from its Riu Montego Bay family resort (the facilities of which—including the spa, bars, disco, and popular jerk chicken hut on the beach—Riu Palace guests are also welcome to use). It is an all-inclusive property, covering all meals, drinks (even premium brands, if you ask) and water sports (including a free introductory scuba lesson in the pool).

The rooms are spanking new and quite chic: all crisp lines and 90-degree angles of black and white accented with royal purple, the open-plan bathrooms fitted with oversized whirlpool tubs. You are on the airport flight path (the end of the runway’s about a mile away), but watching those planes come in low over the hotel is an attraction in and of itself.
