With its intricately carved, domed facade crowning Monterrey’s highest hill, this beautifully restored bishopric palace, dating from 1787, houses an engaging regional history museum. The story of Monterrey’s rise from remote frontier outpost to industrial and economic powerhouse, though, must compete with the 360-degree view of the city and its cradle of mountains, not to mention the country’s largest (50 x 28.6 meters/164 x 94 feet) Mexican flag waving atop a 100m (328-ft) pole.
