Hotels in Monteverde
When choosing a place to stay in Monteverde, be sure to check whether the rates include a meal plan. In the past, almost all the lodges included three meals a day in their prices, but this practice is waning.
Monteverde Country Lodge (tel. 2645-7175), is a homey, simple hotel run by the folks at Hotel Poco a Poco. For real budgeteers, there are quite a few backpacker havens in Santa Elena and spread along the road to the reserve. The best of these is the Pensión Santa Elena (tel. 2645-5051), which also offers swankier rooms with private bathrooms in an annex. Owned and operated by Texan Ran Smith, and right next to the popular Taco Taco takeout counter run by his sister, this affordable hotel is centrally located in Santa Elena’s triangular, three-street downtown.
Finally, it’s possible to stay in a room just steps from the entrance to the reserve at Selina Monteverde (tel. 7146-7986), which has both dorms and private rooms, the latter tiny but mostly with private bathrooms, decorated in fun and funky style. Greeting guests is a massive statue of a somewhat melancholy fellow, but clearly he hasn’t been spending much time enjoying Selina’s cinema, pool tables, or happy hour. Doubles begin at $64, while dorms are $25 per person. Note: Because you’re so close to the park, you’re nowhere near to the town here, so take that into account when making your transportation choices.

Arco Iris Lodge
This small boutique hotel is actually right in the town of Santa Elena, but you’d never know it. The expansive grounds and gardens give it a great sense of isolation and privacy (though you can still walk to shops and restaurants). The rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes from…$$Around Town - Campground
Chira Glamping
★★[em]Just east of the town center, Chira is a small collection of stylishly decorated geodesic domes with private bathrooms and handcrafted wooden furnishings, connected by a stilted walkway and perched on a steep hillside. Each is equipped with a large terrace overlooking the…$$$On the road - Hotel
El Establo Mountain Hotel
Years ago, the Beeche family transformed its old horse stable (hence, el establo) into a simple roadside budget lodge. Today, that original hostel is gone, and in its place is arguably the biggest and most conventionally swank hotel in Monteverde. Large rooms are spread around…$$$Around Town - Hotel
Hidden Canopy Treehouses
For an intimate, unique, in-touch-with-nature experience in the Monteverde area, you can’t beat this place. Although a couple of perfectly lovely rooms are off the main lodge building, the individual “treehouses” are a much better option. Set in the forest canopy, these are all ample…$$$Around Town - Hotel
Hotel Belmar
One of the oldest hotels in the area, this family-run lodge continues to improve and expand, with younger generations infusing much life into the property. Of course, the place has good bones, starting with the flower-filled grounds, which are set on a hillside and boast expansive…$$Around Town - Hotel
Hotel Fonda Vela
This longstanding hotel is one of the closest you’ll find to the Monteverde reserve, just a 15-minute or so walk away. Rooms, in several separate buildings, have views over the forests all the way to the Gulf of Nicoya. Locally milled wood planking is used for walls, floors,…$$Around Town - Hotel
Hotel Heliconia
Located at the Cerro Plano intersection along the road between Santa Elena and the Monteverde reserve, this is another local lodge that has steadily grown and expanded over the years. The largest building (on the highest part of the 6-acre property) is where you’ll find the rooms…$$Around Town - Hotel
Hotel Poco a Poco
A good choice for families with kids, the “Little by Little Hotel” is a hive of activity, with a pool, small playhouse, restaurant, heated Jacuzzi, and small spa. Located on the outskirts of Santa Elena, Poco a Poco has clean, comfortable rooms (cream tiled floors, quality beds) that…$$Around Town - Hotel
Hotel Senda
Sustainability is embedded into every aspect of this stunning eco-retreat, from the solar powered water heaters to the refusal to use plastic anywhere on the property. But that doesn’t mean pampering is neglected. Staff are both knowledgable and cheerfully indulgent with guests,…$$$Cerro Plano - Hotel
La Colina Lodge
This is my favorite budget option in the area. The rustic old lodge (originally the Pensión Flor Mar) is fairly close to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, and it radiates a very friendly, homey vibe. Guests from all over the world gather in the common lounge area, or cook together…$Around Town - Hotel
Monteverde Lodge & Gardens
Some things do get better with age, and that’s true of this pioneering ecolodge, which is now run by Böëna Wilderness Lodges, owners of some of the country’s premier ecolodges. Rooms are large and cozy, with hardwood floors, orthopedic beds, and a wall of windows or French doors with…$$$Around Town
