Grand Hôtel du Midi
If you want the best, book in this aptly named grand hotel opposite the Opera House. The three-story hotel was built in 1876 in Second Empire style and much of the original stained glass, molded ceilings and columns remain intact. The unusually spacious guestrooms have a contemporary look—boldly patterned wallpapers, fan shaped headboards on the beds—and each gets a small balcony
The bathrooms are equally as dramatic, with Italian showers, though you’ll have to book a suite if you want a bath. The excellent breakfast is served in a room with dark purple tiling and original stained glass. There’s a bar and an outside terrace for a drink or a coffee watching the world go by.
