Monument Valley Travel Guide
Monument Valley is an area of free-standing sandstone rock formations that rise up from the desert floor. Up to 1000 feet tall, they create a truly magical desert landscape, striking and instantly recognisable having been featured in numerous films. The most familiar formations are called the Mittens.
Facilities are sparse as the area is very remote, so don't plan on staying too long unless you are in an RV or want to rough it. There are a number of tours you can take by jeep, horseback, plane, helicopter, or on foot. The park's Visitor Centre provides information on local tour guides. The best time to visit is from April to November. Access on the reservation is restricted as the area is inhabited by Native Americans in the Navajo Nation tribal park. Be respectful of their home and do not take pictures of the residents without their permission.
