This snug, friendly eatery is located on a tiny square on the east side of the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s big outdoor produce market. In winter, the wood-panelled dining room hung with deer antlers makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into a hunting cabin—an upscale one serving fine wine, however. In summer, tables are set up outside. You might begin with homemade cream of carrot soup or black-truffle tortellini in cream sauce. The chef makes a great Tafelspitz (boiled beef), and you can also order classic dishes such as roast duck with applesauce or roast suckling pig. Always classy, consistently good, and never pretentious, this spot is a favorite among locals.
