Mývatn is a common launch point for tours of the interior, especially to Askja Caldera and Kverkfjöll. The bus that takes the Sprengisandur route across the interior highlands to Landmannalaugar also leaves from Mývatn.
Mýflug Air (tel. 464-4400; www.myflug.is), based at the small airfield just outside Reykjahlíð, runs sightseeing tours of Mývatn-Krafla, Jökulsárgljúfur, Askja, Kverkfjöll, Vatnajökull, Grímsey, and other natural spectacles with a fleet of two six-seaters and a ten-seater. Tours range from 20 minutes and 5,000kr ($80/£40) to 2 hours and 15,000kr to 20,000kr ($240-$320/£120-£160) with a minimum of two passengers, or three for Grímsey. Flights are weather-dependent, and departure times are by agreement.
Hótel Reykjahlíð (tel. 464-4142; www.reykjahlid.is) organizes 5-hour guided tours of Lofthellir, a lava cave bedizened with lustrous and ghostly ice formations. The cost is 8,200kr ($131/£66) adults or 5,500kr ($88/£44) children 6 to 12, with a four-person or 32,800kr ($525/£262) minimum. Gloves, helmets, flashlights, and studded boots are provided. Tours run June through September, but after August 15 groups of four can be difficult to assemble. Dress warmly.
Sel-Hótel Mývatn (tel. 464-4164; www.myvatn.is) arranges 1-hour tours with a choice of destinations for 3,900kr ($62/£31) per person; ask about longer excursions. Saltvík (tel. 847-9515; www.skarpur.is/saltvik), based 5km (3 miles) outside Húsavík, leads unforgettable multi-day tours devoted mostly to the Mývatn-Krafla area.
Hótel Reykjahlíð (tel. 464-4142; www.reykjahlid.is) offers a 6- to 7-hour excursion covering Krafla and Jökulsárgljúfur National Park (9,900kr/$158/£79 adults, 6,700kr/$107/£54 children 6-12). The tour includes Gjástykki, a starkly beautiful volcanic area north of Krafla caldera and inaccessible to regular cars. Gjástykki is under consideration for a new geothermal power plant, so enjoy the scenery while you can. Departures, by reservation only, are from June 15 through September at 8am, with a four-person minimum. From September through May, Sel-Hótel Mývatn (tel. 464-4164; www.myvatn.is) runs a jeep tour of Mývatn for 9,500kr ($152/£76) per person, and a more-off-road tour for 13,500kr ($216/£108).
