Getting There & Around

The only village in the area is Reykjahlíð, on the northeast shore of Mývatn. Skútustaðir, on the south side of the lake, has a small cluster of tourist services.

By Car -- Reykjahlíð, along Rte. 87 just off the Ring Road, is 103km (64 miles) east of Akureyri and 166km (103 miles) west of Egilsstaðir. The only place to arrange car rental is Hótel Reynihlíð (tel. 464-4170; www.myvatnhotel.is).

By Bus -- The Trex bus (tel. 587-6000; www.trex.is) connecting Akureyri and Egilsstaðir stops at Skútustaðir and Reykjahlíð. It runs daily from June through August. The cost is 2,300kr ($37/£18) from Akureyri or 3,000kr ($48/£24) from Egilsstaðir. SBA Norðurleið (tel. 550-0700; www.sba.is) has Mývatn-Krafla sightseeing day tours departing from Akureyri and Mývatn; they are detailed in the widely available brochure Iceland On Your Own. The tour from Akureyri (8,100kr/$140/£65; 9 hr.) hits Goðafoss, Skútustaðagígar, Stóra-Víti, Hverir, Grjótagjá, and Dimmuborgir. From Reykjahlíð, the main daily tour (4,100kr/$66/£33; 3 1/4 hr.) hits Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá, Stóra-Víti, Hverir, and the Mývatn Nature Baths. Unforgivably, neither tour goes to Leirhnjúkur. All Trex and SBA buses leaving Reykjahlíð board at the N1 gas station.

Unfortunately there's no "hop-on hop-off" bus circling the lake on a regular basis, and SBA Norðurleið's tours generally decline to take passengers on short rides.

By Bike -- Bike rental is available from Hótel Reynihlíð (tel. 464-4170; www.myvatnhotel.is), Ferðaþjónustan Bjarg (tel. 464-3800; ferdabjarg@simnet.is), and Hlíð campsite (tel. 464-4103; hlid@isholf.is). Bicycles are not permitted anywhere cars are not permitted.

On Foot -- Touring the sights by foot is possible, but most travelers find bus tours, car rental, or bike rental more practical. All hotels, restaurants, and services in Reykjahlíð are within walking distance of each other.
