On Denarau Island

You will pay a relatively high price to dine in them, but all of the Denarau Island resorts have restaurants, most either on or near the beach. The island's best breads and pastries are at Lépicier, a coffee shop cum deli in the Fiji Beach Resort & Spa Managed by Hilton (tel. 675 8000; daily 8am to 10pm).

An Esquires coffee shop with high-speed Wi-Fi is in front of the Sheraton Denarau Villas (tel. 675 0989). It's open daily 7am to 10pm. Port Denarau has a branch of Mama's Pizza (tel. 675 0533; daily 9am to 11pm), which has the same menu as the Nadi Town outlet .

In The Martintar Area

The suburban version of Mama's Pizza resides in the rear of the Colonial Plaza shopping center on the Queen's Road between Martintar and Namaka (tel. 672 0922). It has the same menu, prices, and hours as its Nadi Town mama.

The local McDonald's is on the Queen's Road at Emananu Road, between Nadi Town and Martintar.

Special Dining Experiences

For a scenic dining experience, you can sail out on Nadi Bay with Captain Cook Cruises (tel. 670 1823; www.captaincook.com.au). While you dine on rather ordinary Australian fare, Fijians serenade you with island music. The boat departs from Port Denarau Tuesday and Saturday at noon for lunch, daily at 5:30pm for dinner. The lunch cruises cost F$59 (US$38/£20) for adults, while dinner cruises are F$99 (US$64/£33), or F$133 (US$86/£44) including lobster. Children 3 to 15 pay half fare on either cruise, while those 2 and under eat for free. Reservations are required.

First Landing Beach Resort & Villas (tel. 666 6171) offers dinner excursions by boat from Denarau Island to its pleasant outdoor dining area near Vuda Point for F$89 to F$129 (US$58-US$84/£30-£43) per person. The higher price includes lobster as the main course, instead of fish or steak. Note: You must make reservations.

Tips: Keep an Eye on Your Beer Mug -- Bartenders in Fiji are taught to keep your beer mug full and your pockets empty. That is, they don't ask if you want another beer: They keep pouring until you tell them emphatically to stop.
