Citadelle (Citadel)
A fortification has stood atop Namur’s bluff crag since pre-Roman times, and the Citadel in various guises has seen much military action down the years. Today, however, its function is purely peaceful: the fortified castle has become a rural entertainments complex with plenty of amusements to offer families. Kick off a visit by taking the cable car that runs up to the Citadel ramparts and jump on the electric train that chugs around the castle. A high-tech visitor center set in the former barracks offers an overview of European military history alongside the history of Namur and the Citadel. Themed walking tours detail the history of the citadel and there are two medieval-styled scented gardens to explore as well as underground passages where Napoleon’s troops once hid. A traditional perfumery and a small amusement park for young children are also found within the fortified walls. Although the Citadel is open to roam all year around, as is the visitor center, its attractions only open with the tourist season from April until October.
