In the District -- In addition to the clubs mentioned, you'll find several small bars along lower Broadway, in an area long known as Honky-tonk Row or Honky-tonk Highway. The teeming, 2-block strip between Fourth and Fifth avenues is a nostalgic neon hootenanny of country-music sights, sounds, and occasionally some good old-fashioned rabble-rousing.

Good, Godly Fun -- Grammy-winning contemporary Christian music star Michael W. Smith founded Rocketown (401 Sixth Ave. S.; tel. 615/843-4001; in 2003 to provide a place for kids, teens, and young adults to hang out and have fun in a safe, drug- and alcohol-free environment. A nonprofit outreach and entertainment complex spanning more than 40,000 square feet, Rocketown offers everything from a challenging skate park and coffeehouse to a fully equipped concert hall. Although many of the club's activities are geared toward adolescents and teens, concerts are all-ages events. The live-music venue, which has three stages, showcases many of today's top up-and-coming rock bands and singer-songwriters. Who knows? Maybe this is where the next Newsboys, Casting Crowns, or MercyMe will emerge.

Jazz & Blues -- The Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society publishes a free monthly newsletter featuring news and event listings of interest to music buffs of these genres ( If you're here in the summer, check to see who's playing at the society's concert series at Belle Meade Plantation (tel. 615/356-0501).
