In the District -- In addition to the clubs mentioned, you'll find several small bars along lower Broadway, in an area long known as Honky-tonk Row or Honky-tonk Highway. The teeming, 2-block strip between Fourth and Fifth avenues is a nostalgic neon hootenanny of country-music sights, sounds, and occasionally some good old-fashioned rabble-rousing.

Good, Godly Fun -- Grammy-winning contemporary Christian music star Michael W. Smith founded Rocketown (401 Sixth Ave. S.; tel. 615/843-4001; www.rocketown.com) in 2003 to provide a place for kids, teens, and young adults to hang out and have fun in a safe, drug- and alcohol-free environment. A nonprofit outreach and entertainment complex spanning more than 40,000 square feet, Rocketown offers everything from a challenging skate park and coffeehouse to a fully equipped concert hall. Although many of the club's activities are geared toward adolescents and teens, concerts are all-ages events. The live-music venue, which has three stages, showcases many of today's top up-and-coming rock bands and singer-songwriters. Who knows? Maybe this is where the next Newsboys, Casting Crowns, or MercyMe will emerge.

Jazz & Blues -- The Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society publishes a free monthly newsletter featuring news and event listings of interest to music buffs of these genres (www.jazzblues.org). If you're here in the summer, check to see who's playing at the society's concert series at Belle Meade Plantation (tel. 615/356-0501).

Know Before You Go -- Opry bound? Be aware that not all country stars are members of the grand ol' gang. So if you're hoping to see, say, George Strait, Wynonna, or the Dixie Chicks, look elsewhere. Many fans might not realize that Opry members are invited performers who must agree to a certain number of Opry appearances. Consequently, due to scheduling conflicts or other concerns, not every country singer who's a household name is represented.

But plenty of them are. The Opry's stellar roster includes Trace Adkins, Bill Anderson, Dierks Bentley, Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Jim Ed Brown, Roy Clark, John Conlee, Skeeter Davis, Diamond Rio, Little Jimmy Dickens, Joe Diffie, Holly Dunn, The Gatlin Brothers, Vince Gill, Billy Grammer, Tom T. Hall, Emmylou Harris, Jan Howard, Stonewall Jackson, Alan Jackson, George Jones, Hal Ketchum, Alison Krauss, Patty Loveless, Loretta Lynn, Martina McBride, Del McCoury, Reba McEntire, Montgomery Gentry, Lorrie Morgan, The Osborne Brothers, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Jeanne Pruett, Del Reeves, Riders In The Sky, Ricky Van Shelton, Jean Shepard, Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, Marty Stuart, Pam Tillis, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Carrie Underwood, Ricky Van Shelton, Steve Wariner, The Whites, and Trisha Yearwood.
