Located directly across from Bridgestone Arena in front of Fifth + Broadway, NMAAM is billed as “the only museum of its kind,” dedicated to celebrating the history of Black American music. While its smashed-in-between-honky-tonk location infuriated many (especially Memphians who had good reason to argue it belongs there) there’s no disputing the fact that it’s convenient for Nashville tourists. From Aretha Franklin and The Supremes to Lil Wayne and Dr. Dre, the museum tells a compelling story, mixing history and interactive technology—think karaoke-style exhibits, instrument-playing activations—to make the details come alive. While it’ll cost you an extra $5, spring for the RFID bracelet that you can hold over each station's sensors to save playlists, videos, and more — all of which will be delivered to you via email so you can remember and enjoy everything you learned long after your visit.
