This 2.6-mile walking trail and bikeway is a former railway and post-Katrina success story that now connects neighbors and neighborhoods: It starts just above the French Quarter and traverses the Tremé, Bayou St. John, and Mid-City. If you’re renting a bike, the greenway will facilitate your explorations with nary a pothole in sight. (Bonus: It passes almost right by Parkway Bakery and other enterprising, adjacent eat- and drinkeries) It’s well lit, but use caution after dark. Check the website for events along the greenway, as well as info about planned walking tours that explain the very important history of this area and the storm-water management techniques it incorporates.
