Ninety years after it first opened, this 1927 building got a massive renovation that brought smiles to many local faces, who recalled paying utility bills, buying bus passes, or ogling newfangled appliances here in years past (NOPSI stands for New Orleans Public Service Inc.). We like it too, not least for the grandiose lobby boasting soaring, 20-foot vaulted ceilings and the stunning recasted moldings. The central CBD location is also a big plus, and Above the Grid rooftop pool and bar boast impressive Superdome views. Given all that grandeur, the well-appointed rooms are surprisingly staid in style, what with their yacht-y navy, white, and tan scheme, but they’re comfortable and crisp, spacious and smart. Best of all might be the bathrooms, which clearly denote NOPSI as a woman-owned property: they’re big, with double sinks, an enormous shower, and a separate lighted vanity tucked just outside the oft-steamy space. Plenty of mirrors and storage space also feature into the well-thought-out spaces. All-around pro service is the capper.
