Though this sweet, genuine ice cream parlor celebrated its 100th birthday under 5 feet of water, it’s long since come back—and ostensibly not a thing has changed. Run by the same family since 1905, the Brocatos make rich Italian ice cream and ices, cookies, and pastries amid a wonderful throwback atmosphere. Standards like chocolate and stracciatella (chocolate chip) are capital-P Perfect; hard-to-find Italian specialties like spumoni and casatta are spot-on; and the fresh lemon ice is legendary (don’t try to decide between that and seasonal fresh fruit ices, like Ponchatoula strawberry and blood orange; just get both), while the panna cotta custard has brought us to our knees. After that we get a freshly filled cannoli. Heck yeah, we do.
