Popeye’s will do when we’re far from New Orleans, but if we’re in town it’s gotta be family-owned McHardy’s for take-out fried chicken. It’s moist, tender, slightly crispy-skinned, perfectly seasoned, and cheap. Stellar. We never have a party without it, and often make a party just to have it. The other “fixins” are okay—the mustardy, nearly mashed homemade potato salad is the standout—but the bird is the word here. Tip: Cheap, hot, to-go breakfasts, too; cooked fresh from $2 up.
