Set in a majestic Belle Epoque complex, the Hispanic Society has been collecting the art of Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the Philippines since 1904. A lengthy and costly ($20 million) renovation kept it out of the public eye for a number of years until spring of 2023, when it reopened with a flourish—and a show of the Goyas, Picassos, El Grecos and other treasures that it owns. Later exhibitions focused on paintings that illustrated contemporary fashions during the Renaissance, archeological finds from ancient Iberia, and the works of 19th century Peruvian painter Pancho Fierro.. Always on view is a Joaquín Sorolla’s room-wrapping mural showing richly detailed scenes of Spanish life in the early 20th century.
