Set in an area of Jersey City that’s a dead-ringer for Dallas, Texas (huge boxy skyscrapers, pedestrian-free streets, malls) the Candlewood offers the types of perks that are standard in parts of the U.S.A. but are rarely seen in the NYC area at this reasonable a price. (Note that the other hotels in the immediate area have rates that are no lower than Manhattan’s). I’m talking Texas-sized rooms with usable kitchenettes (including ranges, fridges, every kitchen gadget you could need, even dishwashers!), and pleasant, on-trend décor featuring a huge desk (for business travelers), comfy beds and spacious bathrooms. The only downside to staying here is the 1/3 of a mile walk to the PATH train—but the hotel runs a shuttle. So you don’t forget where you are, ask for a room with a view, across the river, of the Freedom Tower.
