Do good while dining. At this California-inspired café, one percent of the profits go to The Door, a neighborhood youth empowerment program three blocks away; many of the kitchen staff and counter help are young people who have gone through the center’s hospitality retraining program. So that’s why you should eat here, but do you want to is the question? I think you will. Chef Amy Yi comes to the operation from some of the swankiest restos in Gotham, and she’s elevating the California-style grain bowl to something really special, using such luxe ingredients as sheep’s milk cheese from the Pyrenees and maitake mushrooms. The combos are creative, as in the "Over the Rainbow," which mixes brown basmati rice with sweet potatoes, broccoli, kale, pickled beets, lentil falafel, and jalapeno tahini. First-rate sandwiches, handmade desserts, and breakfast items are available, too. Note: Customers order at the counter but the food is delivered to them once they sit down at one of the handsome, rough-hewn tables (they're made from reclaimed wood and topped with vases of twiggy flowers).
