Though the stats are shaky, most experts estimate that New York City is home to the largest LGBTQ population in North America, if not the world. All in all, there are about 70 major bars and nightclubs to suit every taste, wardrobe, and fetish, but the party only starts there. I’d recommend that you check out such publications as GetOutMag.com,  the lesbian-centric GO (www.gomag.com), and the more mainstream Time Out New York magazine (given out free on Wednesdays at subway stations and elsewhere) for listings of these clubs as well as the innumerable dance parties, go-go and drag shows, gay knitting circles (yes, really), and other happenings that take place at dozens of venues around the city. Of course, many New York bars, clubs, and cabarets are mixed with both gay and straight clientele (especially in ’hoods like the Village, Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen).

You'll find listings for individual gay bars and lesbian bars here.
