Hotels in Newport RI
The Gateway Visitor Center (tel. 800/976-5122 or 401/849-8040; www.gonewport.com) lists vacancies in motels, hotels, and inns on a large TV monitor. Most can be called from free direct-line phones located nearby. Less impulsive travelers should reserve in advance, especially on weekends (2 months ahead for weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day). On short notice, though, you can try Newport Reservations (tel. 800/842-0102; www.newportreservations.com).
Many of the better motels are located in Middletown, about 2 miles north of downtown Newport. Possibilities include the Courtyard by Marriott, 9 Commerce Dr. (tel. 401/849-8000; www.marriott.com); Newport Ramada Inn, 936 W. Main Rd. (tel. 401/846-7600; www.ramada.com); and Newport Gateway Hotel, 31 W. Main Rd. (tel. 401/847-2735; www.historicinnsofnewport.com). Newport itself has a Marriott, 25 America's Cup Ave. (tel. 401/849-1000).
The rates given here generally have very wide ranges depending upon seasonal demand, so a $300 room on weekends in July might be half that in spring. The summer season is usually defined as Memorial Day to Columbus Day, with lower prices in effect the rest of the year.
