Restaurants in Newport RI
There are far too many restaurants in Newport to give full treatment to even just the best among them. Equal in many ways to those recommended below are Canfield House, 5 Memorial Blvd. (tel. 401/847-0416); Yesterday's & the Place, 28 Washington Sq. (tel. 401/847-0116); and The West Deck, 1 Waites Wharf (tel. 401/847-3610). And for bargain dining in pricey Newport, the bountiful pastas of Salas, 343 Thames St. (tel. 401/845-8772), are a perfect choice for hungry families.
The dining rooms at Castle Hill and The Chanler are unsurpassed in this resort town of many good restaurants. They are open to any members of the public who are unintimidated by the expenditures required. Do make reservations. Figure about $200 to $300 for dinner for two.
Cut costs but not enjoyment by assembling a picnic at Max's Market, 469 Lower Thames St. (tel. 401/849-8088). Special sandwiches include a crab cake with rémoulade, a lemon hummus wrap, quesadillas, and a dilled shrimp construction. There are 10 salads and other items along the lines of barbecue pulled pork.
Winter hours and days of operations vary considerably. Call ahead to avoid disappointment.
