You can surf all year round in Nicaragua, with waves as big as 4m (13 ft.) crashing into the coast in the months of March and April. The dry season, from November to February, has smaller waves of 2m (6 1/2 ft.) or less, but the weather is better and the surf ideal for beginners. Water temperatures average around 77°F (25°C). Boards can be bought or rented in La Libertad or San Juan del Sur, but hardcore surfers often bring their own, especially if they intend to go to less developed spots.

The southwestern Pacific shores of Nicaragua are where the best surfing takes place, particularly around San Juan del Sur and the string of beaches that stretches north and south. Here, you'll find cheap beach-bum hostels and luxury surf camps. Beach access is becoming a problem as the area becomes more developed, and many of the best breaks can be reached only by boat. Yet there are plenty of options for all budgets. Popoyo is fast becoming the most popular place to surf, and other well-regarded beaches include Playa Pie de Gigante and Playa Madera. Surfing is also possible on the beaches west of León, such as Poneloya and Las Peñitas. There is little or no surfing along the Atlantic coast.
