Challenging roads and rugged landscape make both countries perfect for mountain biking, though rental bikes are limited to a handful of areas, and there are few specialist outfitters or tour agencies. If you are on a long-distance cycle trip, bring spare equipment, as bike stores are few and far between. San Juan del Sur has several hostels and restaurants that rent mountain bikes for use on the dirt roads that stretch up and down the coast. Isla de Ometepe provides an excellent 35km (22-mile) circuit around Volcán Maderas. You can rent bikes on the island at Hotel Finca Playa Venecia and Hotel Finca Santo Domingo. Another good route in Nicaragua is through the mountain towns of Los Pueblos Blancos, close to Masaya.
