Getting There -- The Long Island Expressway runs to Riverhead; from there, take Route 25 East. The Long Island Rail Road (tel. 516/822-LIRR) stops in Riverhead, Mattituck, Southold, and Greenport. The Hampton Jitney (tel. 631/283-4600) provides bus service from multiple locations in New York City to Riverhead, Aquebogue, Jamesport, Laurel, Mattituck, Cutchogue, Peconic, Southold, Greenport, East Marion, Orient Village, and Orient Point for $22 one-way. Long Island MacArthur Airport (tel. 631/467-3210), situated mid-Long Island, is the closest airport and is served by several airlines. From Connecticut, take the Cross Sound Ferry (tel. 631/323-2525; www.longislandferry.com), which sails from New London, Connecticut, to Orient Point, New York. Schedules change daily, leaving 8 to 22 times a day. Cars and passenger trucks are allowed.

Visitor Information -- Tourist information booths are located on Main Road in the towns of Laurel (tel. 631/298-5757) and Greenport (tel. 631/477-1383), but are open daily only during July and August (scattered hrs. at other times). Getting Around -- A car is helpful if you plan to scour for antiques, visit wineries, or just explore, but be warned: The traffic in summer is a nightmare. If you'd prefer to relax, the train is the better option.
