Dating from 1096, and principally of Norman design, Norwich Cathedral is noted for its long nave with lofty columns. Built in the late Perpendicular style, the spire rises 95m (315 ft.); together with the keep of the castle, it forms a significant landmark on the Norwich skyline. More than 300 bosses (knoblike ornamental projections) on the ceiling depict biblical scenes. The impressive choir stalls with handsome misericords date from the 15th century. Edith Cavell, an English nurse executed by the Germans during World War I, is buried on the cathedral's Life's Green. The quadrangular cloisters, which date from the 13th century, are the largest monastic cloisters in England.

The cathedral visitor center includes a refreshment area and exhibition and film room with tape/slide shows about the cathedral. Guided tours run year-round Monday to Saturday at 10:45am, noon, and 2:15pm. The tours are available in five languages -- English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. A short walk from the cathedral is Tombland, one of the most interesting old squares in Norwich.
