The Sweetest Tooth in All of Sicily

The denizens of Noto are said to love sugary concoctions and confections more so than people anywhere else in Sicily. To satisfy that need they are celebrated for their marzipan and often for their ice creams. The town's leading pastry shop is the named Mandorio in Fiore, or "almond in bloom." It stands at Via Ducezio 2 (tel. 0931-836615), close to the Church of Saint Carmine. Dozens of cakes are on sale, along with sweet cookies and a huge array of candied fruits. Locals flock here for the famous Sicilian cassata, among the best we've had on the island. Another delight is the Pasticceria La Fontana Vecchia, Corso Vittorio Emanuele 150 (tel. 0931-839412), whose specialty is panedi spagna or sponge cake. It's filled with a sweet ricotta, and the ice cream here pleases the most demanding gelato aficionados.
