The Northumberland Coast is Nova Scotia cottage country. Small neighborhoods of cottages are stretched along the shore to take advantage of the warm waters. There are plenty of cottages to rent by the day or week from modern beach houses to basic, comfortable cabins. Listings of rentals can be found on the Tourism Nova Scotia website or sites like Vrbo, or Airbnb.

Antigonish is located just off the Trans-Canada Highway, the last town before you reach Cape Breton Island. As such, it’s home to a number of chain motels, both downtown and on the “strip” leading into town. But there are alternatives. In summer, budget travelers can book no-frills dorm rooms, or more comfortable apartments (some with full kitchens), at St. Francis Xavier University (tel. 902/867-4687) from mid-May through mid-August, when student residences are transformed into a summer hotel. The rooms are simple but come with all the essentials, including private bathrooms and kitchens, TVs and access to a fitness center, the pool, and laundry facilities. Single and double guest suites cost between C$124 and C$144. Meals are available in the Morrison Dining Hall for a small charge. There’s free Wi-Fi throughout as well as free parking.
