Getting There

The most common way to reach Ojimachi is by bus from Takayama, which takes about 1 hour and costs ¥2,400. There are usually seven departures from Takayama (tel. 0577/32-1688) daily April through November, less frequently in winter (heavy winter snowfall sometimes renders the road impassable). From Kanazawa, a bus operates thrice daily mid-March through November; the fare is ¥1,800 for the 1 1/4-hour trip. In any case, buses arrive at a parking lot next to the Gassho Zukuri Minka-en open-air museum ; minshuku are located in the village on the other side of the river, reached via pedestrian suspension bridge.

Visitor Information

There's a tourist office (tel. 05769/6-1013; daily 8:30am-5pm) located next to the bus parking lot. You can pick up an English-language map, reserve a room in a minshuku if you have not already done so, and store luggage here for ¥300 if it won't fit in any of the adjacent lockers. There's a second tourist office across the river on the main road in the center of town, open daily 9am to 5pm.
