Getting There

By Plane -- The nearest airport is at Kalmar. From the Kalmar airport, take the Flygbuss to the center of Kalmar, then transfer to bus 101 or 106 for the 40-minute ride across the bridge to the center of Borgholm on Öland. By Bus -- Buses run from the Kalmar terminal to Borgholm on Öland in less than an hour; take no. 101 or 106. Bus transits within Öland cost from 18SEK to 91SEK ($3.60-$18/£1.80-£9.10), depending on the distance traveled. Call tel. 0200/218-18 (only within Sweden).

By Car -- From Kalmar, take the bridge over the sound, then turn left onto Route 136 to reach Borgholm.

Go to the Ölands Tourist, ABSE-386-21, Färjestaden (tel. 0485/56-06-00; www.olandsturist.se), at the Öland end of the famous 6.5km (4-mile) bridge to Kalmar. It's open January 8 to April Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm; May to June Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm; July to August 6 Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 10am to 5pm; August 7 to August 20 Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm; August 21 to August 31 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm; September Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm; October to December Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
