On the hillside above Orebić, a steep 20-minute walk away, this 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance monastery is approached along an avenue of cypress trees. Commanding spectacular views down onto the turquoise sea and the island of Korčula, the site was chosen as a fine vantage point for observing passing ships, at a time when Pelješac belonged to Dubrovnik, while Korčula was ruled by Dubrovnik’s archrival, Venice. Inside the monastery, see the display of religious paintings and votive gifts, donated by local seafarers as a way of saying thanks to the Virgin for protecting them through storms and rough seas.
