Justly beloved by increasing beltlines throughout the Midwest, Portillo’s arrived just east of Disney World in 2022 with its counter-service formula intact: A rangy menu of char-broiled burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, heaping salads, and house-made cakes served in kitschy 1950s-style decor with diner booths and fire engine-red accents. At first, the menu sounds more or less identical to countless places in O-Town, but here, the added signatures are the mounds of Italian beef sandwiches; a Polish-style sausage with mustard and grilled onions that Portillo’s has served for decades in Illinois; and the truly authentic Chicago-style hot dog in a spongy bun piled with sport peppers, diced onions, lurid green relish, and an essential dusting of celery salt. Portillo’s also has a drive-through window for slaking that Chicago dog craving on the go.
