Step through the sliding glass doors of the beachside suites and you’ll find yourself on Tofino’s most popular surfing beach, Cox Bay. There is something shiveringly magical about watching the black-clad surfers emerge from the early morning mist—luckily, unlike them, you can sneak back inside where it’s warm and there is coffee. Long Beach Lodge is homey yet grand, with a distinctly West Coast Craftsman look to it. Its most popular feature is the great room, which truly is one of the greatest rooms on the coast, with its high ceilings, comfy armchairs, big stone fireplace, unbeatable ocean views, and award-winning martinis. The Great Room is also the resort’s restaurant, and a spectacular place to enjoy local Dungeness crab or seafood chowder, though the new SandBar Bistro, opening on the beach in June 2014, is sure to be just as popular. The guest rooms are pretty great, too: They’re painted the color of forest light, with rosy cedar millwork and luxurious soaker tubs, some with stone fireplaces and balconies. A handful of rainforest cottages are tucked into the woods, perfect for families.
