The senses are overwhelmed by the sweet smell of baked goods at this classy Greek pastry shop and café on a busy road in the San Francisco neighborhood. This is a family-operated chain that dates to 1938, and includes locations in Greece, Boston, and now Panama. Athanasiou is a temple to sweet, succulent confections, layered with fruits, nuts, and honey. The baklava, pistachio shortbreads, and Kritsinia, bought by weight or in pre-made packages, are as authentic as what's sold in Greece. There's a small and often-filled seating area with table service. Different soups are sold each day, and there is also a full coffee bar.
