Dammuso or die -- A rented dammuso is our top accommodations choice on Pantelleria; a minimum stay of 1 week is required in summer, but you can often swing a shorter stay of 3 to 5 days outside of July and August. Elite travelers go to great lengths (and great expense) to stay at the uber-chic Monastero resort (tel. 349/5595580; www.monasteropantelleria.com; rates available on request), owned by the fashion photographer Fabrizio Ferri, or at one of the spectacular dammuso compounds that belong to other luminaries of European style. More modest budgets can get the same general idea by renting one of the myriad dammusi, through such agencies as the highly recommended Il Dammuso (www.ildammuso.com), which has the most comprehensive catalog of these vacation units in all price ranges, ranging from barebones, Flintstones-like units that cost 500€ per week to lavishly remodeled villas with stunning kitchens and magazine-worthy design throughout (upwards of 2,000€ per week). Be aware, however, that even some of the more sumptuous properties are a good distance from the sea.
