There are three big draws for tourists in the Paonia area: fruit and farming, wine and wineries, and the outdoors. A good first stop is Delicious Orchards, 39130 Colo. 133 west of Paonia ([tel] 970/527-1110; www.deliciousorchardstore.com), a combination market/farm with 16 acres of orchards where visitors can go out and pick their own fruit, including apricots, pears, and apples, or shop for locally grown produce, wine, and other regional products. The store is the retail face of a locally produced brand of juice and cider, Big B’s, and the best place to try some. There is also a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch and a campground ($10 to $20 nightly). For more information on  the valley’s farms—a good many of which welcome visitors—the Valley Organic Growers Association Directory (www.vogaco.org) is a useful resource.

As far as the vino, there are about 10 wineries in Paonia and Hotchkiss, including Terror Creek Winery, 17445 Garvin Mesa Rd., Paonia ([tel] 970/527-3484; www.terrorcreekwinery.com); and Stone Cottage Cellars, 41716 Reds Rd., Paonia ([tel] 970/527-3444; www.stonecottagecellars.com). In Hotchkiss, check out the organic, biodynamic winery/distillery at Jack Rabbit Hill, 26567 North Rd. ([tel] 970/835-3677; www.jackrabbithill.com).
