Biking -- Rent a bike from one of the many shops on the main street Atamu Tokena (around $15-$20/£10-£13 per day).

Horseback Riding -- Riding horseback is one of the most enjoyable ways to see Easter Island. Although you can hire a horse for an hour or so and limit the ride to sites around town, a more thrilling, full-day journey is up to the top of the volcano Terevaka, the highest point of the island. Piti Pont is the person to call (tel. 32/210-0664 or 9/574-0582).

Kayaking, Surfing & Other Watersports -- Rent boards and kayaks at Orca Diving Center's Hare Orca shop (tel. 32/255-0375;, and pick up information about the best spots to do both. Surfboards rent for $20 (£13) a day and single ocean kayaks and bodyboards for $15 (£10) a day.

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling -- The waters off Easter Island are some of the bluest -- and clearest -- in the world, providing scuba divers with up to 60m (200 ft.) of visibility. Diving here is in open-sea conditions, with limited coral reef. You won't see the throngs of sea life found at other South Pacific destinations, but you will see wild volcanic landscapes such as sheer cliffs, ledges, arches, caves, and possibly the moai that Mike Rapu sunk 25m below sea level in honor of his ancestors. Water temperatures that average 65° to 80°F (18°-27°C) oblige divers to wear a wetsuit. Absolute beginners can join in, too, with a guide-assisted Discovery Dive, or an easygoing snorkeling trip (Mike Rapu's trips even include a Rapa Nui lunch). If you're up for it, don't miss this fascinating underwater opportunity. You'll find two companies at the harbor; both are reputable operations with high-quality dive masters, and both offer PADI scuba classes. Mike Rapu Diving Center (tel. 32/255-1055; is owned by "Mike," a Rapa Nui co-owner of explora's Casas Rapa Nui and the South American breath-holding champion; Orca Diving Center (tel. 32/255-0375; is owned by a French diver who arrived here in 1978 with Jacques Cousteau and stayed.
