If you'd like to go horseback riding, try Kohl's Ranch Stables, on Hwy. 260, 17 miles north of Payson (tel. 928/478-0030). Rates start at $30 for a 1-hour ride.

The Highline Trail is a 50-mile hike along the lower slope of the Mogollon Rim. You can find out more about this and other area trails, and learn which ones are open to mountain bikes, at the Payson Ranger Station, 1009 E. You can also hike this area in the company of llamas that will carry your gear for you. John and Joyce Bittner of the Ranch at Fossil Creek, 10379 W. Fossil Creek Rd., Strawberry (tel. 928/476-5178; www.ranchatfossilcreek.com), offer half-day llama hikes ($65 for adults, $40 for children 11 and under). Overnight stays in a yurt can be arranged for $85. This ranch also raises goats and produces both goat cheese and goats-milk fudge. Guided and self-guided tours of the ranch's facilities can be arranged, and cheese, fudge, and soap are all available for sale. You'll find Fossil Creek Creamery's cheeses on the menus of some of the state's best restaurants.
