Quinta do Vallado

One of the oldest and most famous of the Douro's wine estates. This quinta 10 minutes drive from the center of Régua celebrated its tricentenary in 2016. It produces some of the region's best wines—both ports and table wines—and is still run by the descendants of Dona Antónia Ferreira, a legendary figure in the story of port. In 2005, they opened their first rooms in the 18th-century manor, and added a modern extension in local schist stone that blends into the surrounding wine terraces. The views across the vine-covered hillsides are breathtaking, although slightly marred by the highway. There's a relaxing garden containing a pool-with-a-view. Both the 21st-century and 18th-centrury rooms are tastefully furnished with natural materials and understated colors, and come with complimentary fruit and wine.  Included with the room are visits to the winery, tastings, bikes and fishing gear—in case you fancy trying to lift a trout from the Rio Corgo which flows past on its way to the Douro.
