Getting There -- The north entrance to Petrified Forest National Park is 25 miles east of Holbrook on I-40. The south entrance is 20 miles east of Holbrook on U.S. 180.

Fees & Hours -- The entry fee is $10 per car. Between early May and early September, the park is open from 7am to 7pm; late February to early May and early September to late October, it's open daily from 7am to 6pm; and late October to late February, it's open daily from 8am to 5pm.

No Smoke Signals Necessary -- If you're driving into Arizona from New Mexico, you can get information on the state at the Painted Cliffs Welcome Center, Grants Road, Lupton (tel. 928/688-2448; www.arizonaguide.com), which is at exit 359 off I-40. The visitor center is open daily from 8am to 5pm.
