Stephen Starr, Philly’s biggest-deal restaurateur, is responsible for this burger stand in Franklin Square Park at the top of Independence Mall. It's fast, inexpensive, and delicious, from the hamburgers to the hand-cut fries. Two specialties you just have to try (not that burgers aren't good) are the salami-wrapped kosher hot dogs topped with onion, spicy cherry peppers, plum totmatoes, and mustard; and the famous Cake Shake, a milkshake made with Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets (a local, er, delicacy). Yes, the Krimpets are blended right in, so be prepared for tiny bits of cake to come flowing up the straw. (My 6-year-old prefers the root beef floats.) Alas, the place was named for the location (Franklin Square), not the shape of its burgers. I have suggested they go all the way and start using square beef patties, but so far to no avail.
