What part of “chicken & waffles” do you not understand? This is a south Phoenix perennial, now expanded to seven locations. The original is just a mile or two below downtown and just a mile or so west of Sky Harbor’s car rental return. It’s a great place to start or end your trip to the Valley—highly enjoyable, if you can handle very casual, with huge comfy booths, a great staff, and a very-un-Phoenix-like diverse clientele. Someone in your group has to order the “Double-D,” two large and crispy chicken breasts atop a large circular waffle with syrup. But others should try the chicken gizzards, and I recommend an order of catfish beignets and fried pickles for the table. For dessert, try the “banana puddin’.” Note: The portions are not small.
