Subdued lighting, tables adorned with candles and flowers, and a view out to the sea—the director behind the Godfather movies (Francis Ford Coppola, the owner of the resort Mare is in) knows how to set the scene for a romantic dinner. The restaurant is also darn nice for lunch, thanks to the expertly prepared Italian fare and warm service. I like to start things off with the insalata de pesce, which features fresh red snapper smoked on the premises. In addition to nightly specials, there are delicious thin-crust wood-oven pizzas, a selection of pastas, and whole, locally caught fish are roasted in the wood oven (lobster tails get the same treatment in season). Most of the herbs and vegetables served are grown right here at the hotel’s organic garden. The wine list features fine vino from Francis Ford Coppola’s own vineyard.
