Area Code -- The telephone area code is 984.

ATMs, Banks and Currency Exchange shops -- For the largest numbers of banks and ATM machines, head toQuinta Avenida. You'll also find currency exchange specialists, but note that you'll get a better rate using an ATM.

Doctor -- For serious medical attention, go to Hospiten (tel. 984/803-1002), on Hwy. 307 at the second Playacar exit, just south of Sam's Club.

Drugstore -- The Farmacía del Carmen, Avenida Juárez between avenidas 5 and 10 (tel. 984/873-2330), is open 24 hours.


Internet Access -- Most hotels have Wi-Fi, at least in public areas, and Wi-Fi is available at many restaurants and bars on nearly every block around Quinta Avenida. Several public parks also have free Wi-Fi. Power outlets are harder to find, so charge up before heading out.

Parking -- Parking on the street in Playa is tough, as spots are hard to come by and police are quick to ticket violators. The Estacionamiento México, at avenidas Juárez and 10 (where the entrance is located) is open daily 24 hours and is reasonably. There's also a 24-hour lot a few blocks from the pier on Avenida 10 and Calle 3 Sur. Very few hotels have on-site parking, but some can get you reduced rates at nearby lots.

Seasons----The main high season is from mid-December to Easter. Mini high seasons are in August and around Thanksgiving. Low season is all other months, though many hotels further divide these into several micro seasons.

l Events---The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, held in November, attracts international headliners for 3 days of music on the beach.
