Most amenities can be found within a few blocks of Parque Caldas, Popayán’s main plaza. Here you will find banks and ATMs, along with the tourist police office. There’s a post office at Calle 4 no. 5–74.

While not known as an outdoor destination per se, Popayán makes a good base for exploring the nature of southern Colombia. Popayán Tours (www.popayantours.com) can arrange hot spring and cycling trips in Coconuco, climbs of the still active Puracé Volcano, and visits to the indigenous market in Silvia.

Popayán’s historic center is a masterpiece of colonial architecture; many of the most important buildings are within a few blocks of Parque Caldas (the main square) and can be seen in a day.
