Port-au-Prince has some 200 whimsical and intricately ornamented gingerbread houses dating from the turn of the 20th century. As the Architectural Record reported after the 2010 quake, the traditional Haitian construction of these century-old structures withstood seismic loads better than more recent structures made with rigid Portland cement. The city’s “gingerbread neighborhoods” are now on the World Monuments Watch for endangered heritage sites.
