Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)

When I was in school, science was never presented in as interactive, entertaining a manner as it is here. OMSI is all about engaging with science, and it does that with dozens of hands-on exhibits, games, brain teasers, and all the technology you could wish for. Located on the east bank of the Willamette River across from the south end of Waterfront Park, this modern science museum has five huge halls, and both kids and adults find the exhibits fun and fascinating. This is a hands-on museum, and everyone is urged to get involved with displays, from a science playground for young children to physics and chemistry labs for older children. Earth Hall, a multi-dimensional look at the world we live in, includes exhibits on environmental hazards, natural disasters, and climate change. Life Hall deals with the mysteries of human growth and development. The Turbine Hall, devoted to the physical sciences and technology, lets visitors build an aqueduct and program a robot. There are three additional components to the museum, all of which require separate tickets: The Empirical Theater (formerly called the OMNIMAX), the Kendall Planetarium, which features astronomy and laser-light shows, and my favorite, the USS Blueback submarine docked in the river right behind the museum. If the last one looks familiar, that’s because this is the sub used in the film Hunt for Red October.
