World Forestry Center Discovery Museum
Trees, beautiful trees. Forests, beautiful forests. We are dependent upon them for our very survival, and we can no longer take them for granted. They are disappearing at an alarming rate and they need all the help and protection they can get. Oregon’s economy was founded on logging, and the timber industry, although it no longer has the clout it once did, continues to play an important role in the state. It’s also the force behind this museum, which attempts to explain how forests work and how complex they are. Exhibits on the first floor concentrate on the vast forests of the Pacific Northwest, and those on the second floor focus on Russia, China, South Africa, and the Amazon. If you love forests, or want to know more about trees, you will learn something here—but keep in mind that no matter how “sustainable” the practices, the timber industry is about managing forests, not letting them be. There are interesting temporary exhibits staged here throughout the year as well, from photographic exhibits to displays of woodworkers’ art.
