Singers and production crews from the Portland Opera and the casts of touring Broadway shows always stay at the Mark Spencer. Translation: This is a good hotel for extended stays—and for families, as the suites have nice little working kitchens. It’s not the most glamorous of downtown hotels, but it’s not meant to be. The hotel has been undergoing a gradual refurbishment to freshen up all the rooms and expose some features from the original 1907 structure, like brick walls and beamed ceilings. The one-bedroom suites, with their comfy living rooms and completely separate bedrooms, are the best accommodations here. Is it because of all those performers passing through that the bathroom mirrors are so large and fog-free? Other helpful features for longer-stay guests include a coin-operated laundry, a small but serviceable fitness room, and an expanded continental breakfast and complimentary evening wine hour. The staff here is pleasant and professional, and the location is central to downtown and the Pearl District.
